My Stroke of Insight
by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph.D.

My Stroke of Insight

This book is Jill's (the author) story of having a stroke and what it was like to be insider her body as it was happening and throughout the 8 years it took her to recover her speech, ability to walk, read, talk, use her left brain again. It is an extraordinary book because Jill was and is a neurologist, a Harvard-trained brain scientist. At the time of her stroke she was 37 and had been studying the brain for years, pushed by her need/desire to understand what caused her brother's brain disorder, schizophrenia.

By telling her story, which you can also see her present on YouTube, she makes having a stroke that affects your linear thinking (left brain) much more understandable. She shares what really helped her when she was unable to speak and gives a list of ways to interact with stroke victims that also applies to anyone with speech or other brain impairments. And she also shares what was not helpful to her and how she turned away from those she perceived to be taking her energy, or taking too much of her energy when she needed all her energy to just heal.

It is a book of inspiration and helpful information.
